Sixth-generation Texan and retired detective, Kim Sanders, worked in a deep-cover capacity for over three decades at the Dallas Police Department. His heroic takedowns in this dangerously grim line of work earned him the Medal of Valor, a feature episode on A&E’s First 48 and regular consultations with producers of documentaries that require detective work.

In his debut novel, Hermit of Paradise (Brown Books Publishing Group; On sale October 8, 2024), Sanders crafts a fictional narrative inspired by his own real-life experiences, as well as the longing to recapture the innocence of childhood. Likened to Harper Lee’s classic, To Kill a Mockingbird, Sanders’ novel explores the meaning, morality, and the fight to stay human in the face of an unjust world.

“Kim Sanders weaves a tapestry of nostalgia and loss, drawing readers into a world where childhood bliss collides with the harsh realities of adulthood. Profound and immersive … a standout in contemporary Southern fiction.” —Chloe Hall, Twice Emmy Nominated Director and Producer; Co-Producer of Award-Winning, Critically Acclaimed Documentary Film Here. Is. Better

“To enter the world of Hermit of Paradise — more exactly, to be drawn into it by Kim Sanders’ driving narrative — is to be reminded of a time and place where the deepest human loyalties were forged in childhood and built to last.” —Roger Kaplan, Writer for The American Spectator, Contributor to The Wall Street Journal, and Former Editor of The Freedom Review

SUMMARY: Detective Auby Midnight is retired. Or so he imagines. Jaded and transformed by a long career of witnessing degeneracy, tragedy, and true evil, he reflects on the place that first nurtured him: Paradise Cove, Lake Texoma, and the rich, endearing memories of mischief, adventure, and friendship that shaped his childhood. That is, until the day a violent feud brought irrevocable trauma for his best friend, Sunny. Now Sunny implores the wearied Auby to right the wrongs of the past and return to the case that has haunted him and his childhood friends for years. Older, wiser and far more experienced, they set out to defeat the evil that stole their innocence and restore the magic of Paradise Cove.
